What Are You Waiting For?

Are you a writer?
Ask yourself when you last sat down to write. Is your answer today?

Are you a painter?
When was it that you last put the brush to the canvas? Is your answer today?

Are you a musician?
Imagine yourself sitting down with your instrument of choice, writing a new song. Have you done that today?

As artists, we have a tendency to procrastinate. We make excuses. We create barriers instead of simply creating.

I'm too tired.
I have too much to do.
I'll get to it tomorrow.
I have writer's block.
I don't have a muse.

Who are we kidding? There will always be something in the way. You will always think that you have no time for it. You will always make excuses.

I'm not just accusing you. I'm also accusing myself. We all do this. Let's just crush this problem now.

The best way to defeat writer's block is to write. The best way to improve your skill is to keep at it. Telling people that you are an artist does not help you. Thinking about writing one day does not help you.

There was a wise scholar in my generation who made these same points. "Don't let your dreams be dreams," he yelled at the camera. "Just do it!"

For once, let us take the advice of Shia LeBouf and just do it. Get out a pencil and paper and start writing. Pick up your guitar and make some new sounds. Open up Illustrator and start making some graphics.

The only way to become a writer, a painter, a musician, a graphic designer, or any kind of creator is to just do it.
